How Camila Cabello has ditched her 'girl next door' image for a grungy edge

Many long-term fans of Camila Cabello may have noticed her recent rebrand, as the former Fifth Harmony member now looks very different from her days in a girl band.

At the start of the year, the singer ditched her signature brunette tresses for bleach blonde strands and has been experimenting with the 'party girl' aesthetic reminiscent of Kesha and Miley Cyrus at the start of the 2010s.

While her Instagram page once contained fairly tame and wholesome content, the 27-year-old, who was born in Cuba, deleted all her posts and re-started her account with a new look.

Her first post was a clip of herself with her new golden locks hanging out of the passenger seat of a moving car, appearing to have no seatbelt on and singing her new song 'I Luv It' featuring rapper Playboi Carti as she teased fans about its release.

The risque clip was a clear break from her girl-next-door image and an introduction of Camilla the party girl.

Equally, the starlet attended the Met Gala this year in a chainmail gold dress with ripped detailing and a sultry laced-up plunging neckline. She finished off the look with a handbag that was made from a block of solid ice with a copper-coloured rose encased inside it.

As Camila carves out a new edgy look for herself, she has officially ditched her family-friendly image, which is evident in her social media posts.

On one of her Instagram posts, the star went bra-free and wore a tight, light blue cropped t-shirt that said: 'Don't hate me it turns me on.'

She paired this with a short belted denim mini shirt, making the whole outfit look straight out of the early noughties.

Celebrity style expert Rochelle White said the star has '100 per cent' had a 'style refresh' and has switched up her modest style for something a little more on the sexier side.

She told Femail: 'Camila's style this time last year was much more toned down. A lot of black and fitted outfits and clothing. She would have what I would call a toned-down look.

'A lot of black and wardrobe stables with the odd few stand-out pieces. Her previous look was quiet covered up and modest, I feel that she wants to push herself and boundaries with items that make her feel seen and sexy, but in a way that is comfortable to her and represents how she's feeling.'

When she was a brunette last July, Camila attended an awards ceremony in Puerto Rico wearing a very simple black gown that was cut out around her chest area.

The look was simple and basic but lately it seems her event looks have been given that extra special touch of spice.

Another example is her ensemble to the Rob Peace Premiere in January, just before she dyed her hair blonde.

She wore an all-denim outfit featuring a corset and a long, washed-out maxi skirt with a train, giving that ultimate grunge look.

Camila stepped out onto the carpet sporting platinum locks when she attended the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in March wearing a grey dress that had a high split on her thigh and an asymmetrical neckline.

Looks such as these that Rochelle says is the biggest change in her style. She said: 'Her outfit choices are more open, cut away and provocative. There is a lot of boob, tongue and sexually charged poses and images.

'Her previous look was much more toned down as they would call the 'clean girl'. The makeup, outfit and attitude is really the biggest change.'

Camila has also drastically changed her behaviour since she stepped onto the music scene in 2012 and wowed fans on X Factor with her rendition of Aretha Franklin's Respect.

After she announced her departure from the girl band Fifth Harmony, she went on to make pop music inspired by her Latin roots, including the songs Havana and Don't Go Yet.

But her latest song 'I Luv It' is wildly different and does not appear to have been inspired by the same cultural roots - while the album art is also different to how she has previously marketed herself.

The cover for this song features just a picture of her clutching her breasts in a bra, echoing that the singer is entering a whole different era.

During her time at the Met Gala this year, fans even commented on the 'awkward' interaction that she had on the red carpet which left them cringing.

Camila was asked: 'Did you see Doja Cat in the T-shirt dress that's soaking wet?' She said: 'No. The girls are wet tonight.'

This sexual innuendo left the reporter speechless and realising the error of her ways, Camila said: 'Sorry.'

In 2021, she even tried her hand at acting and starred in Amazon's take on a musical of Cinderella, which had Camila front and centre as the lead.

But the PG-rated film flopped, only scoring 4.4 on IMDB and 41 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. with critics commenting on its lack of 'good songs' and romance between Camila and Nicholas Galitzine, who plays Prince Robert.

This 'good girl gone bad' image was seen once before in Disney star Miley Cyrus, when she released Bangerz in 2013 and would often dance provocatively, wear more revealing clothes and dyed her brunette locks blonde before cutting them short.

Rochelle said: 'I feel that Miley would have had an influence, especially during her BANGERZ era - which was a massive pop culture moment. Miley made headlines globally with her antics, she could be hoping for a similar result.

'Usually when moments like this happen in careers, the artist tends to want to do something drastic and make a change.

'She is no doubt taking this opportunity to step out and rewrite her style and image. Judging by her posts [online] the image she going for is not safe and looking at the comments, it is causing debates and conversations.'

One of her most recent Instagram posts features several blurry 'messy' pictures of Camila in an American burger joint Five Guys with her friends sitting on top of the boots eating junk food dressed in black leather.

She also has several posts of her wearing different ski masks. In her music video for 'I Luv It', she is filmed wearing a mask whilst speeding around in a car with the number plate '305 B****'.

Camila has recently gotten closer to Lana Del Ray, known for her retro style and 'sad girl aesthetic' and praised the singer on her Coachella performance.

She wrote on X at the time: 'Not only is Lana Del Rey a once in a lifetime artist Billie said it best, she's the reason for all you b
